As I consider the shift towards creative writing in my journey, I can’t help but wonder: In my mind, are there many voices or just one? Is it that the voice in this writing is a mix of my experiences combined with AI software that suggests better words, or is it only the AI that takes my badly written input and the millions of data points that were trained on to generate a decent text?
In my last post, I wrote about doing hard things; I wanted to share the idea of seeking out hard things in life. Why? Because I believe that experimenting with the discomfort, learning from it, and overall building resilience can help us when shit hits the fan.
Ego and AI
Looking back now, I read that post and it feels unfamiliar. The voice in the post had an odd tone, those peculiar word suggestions by chat GPT to attract more readers.
Wait a minute; what do you mean by that?
I use ChatGPT to identify and correct grammar and punctuation errors. However, in that post, I fell into the trap of using chat GPT with the thought of reaching more readers. It seems that my ego couldn’t handle the feeling of writing for a couple of people. It wanted a quick solution, not the hardest way.
You know, it wasn’t pretty to realize that. I began this experiment to learn how to write and to create my own voice. My goal was to express myself without any expectations. It feels like I have failed myself.
Coming back to base
After reflecting for a while, letting that sinking feeling go away, I decided to come back to the roots and answer a very important question:
Why do I love writing?
I love the act of sitting down, opening my laptop, hearing the sound of the few cars far away, hearing the piano notes reaching my ears, and then three hours later realizing how time flew by, and start wondering “Is this what was in your mind? are you sharing what you want?”
Shifting the focus
That powerful answer prompted my next step. I have decided to shift the focus of this blog and experiment with creative writing. This means you will find short stories, some of them inspired by reality, others just coming out of my imagination.
Of course, this new way might not resonate with my current readers, who I feel grateful for their reading time and support. To them, I say: You have earned a piece of my heart. If you wish to stay with me, I’d be delighted. However, if this new direction doesn’t align with your interests, feel free to unsubscribe from my newsletter :).
With that said, I am starting this journey today. I will continue using ChatGPT for grammar suggestions, but I will definitely not allow it to interfere with the new voice I am creating :).
